In order to attract the top talent, businesses need to create a good experience for the applicants, but what exactly do talent want from their job hunt? LinkedIn conducted a study of over 20,000 professionals around the world to find out what they look for and how they go about their job search. 1) Talent find their opportunities from connections. When professionals begin their job search, they are most likely to ask around their existing contacts to find out if anyone they know can point them in the direction of any current vacancies. Social media is also a great place for seeking out opportunities  from their networks, as well as company websites. 2) Candidates want recruiters to be clear. 80% of professionals are open to hearing from recruiters, even when not actively looking for a new role as it is always good to know what opportunities are out there. However, when they are contacted about a role they want recruiters to cut to the chase, or they are likely to lose interest or trust. In the initial message they want to know what the role is, what the main responsibilities are, why they are right for the job and what  the estimated salary for the role is. 3) Candidates make important judgements about a company in the interview. A job interview is equally as important for the company as it is for the candidate, as 9 out of 10 professionals said a good interview could change their mind about a company they had doubts about before. The top factors that candidates care about in a job interview are getting specific questions about the business answered, having a conversation with the management of the company and receiving feedback. 4) It might surprise you what attracts talent to a role. A job title is not the be all and end all when it comes to applying for or accepting a new job. In fact only 6% of professionals would take a job for a better job title. Factors such as a good company culture, room for professional  development and finding a role that suits them as an individual are some of the most popular reasons for accepting a job and of course a decent salary helps. While this is true in most cases, it doesn’t have to be that way, provided the job seeker understands the search process and becomes efficient with planning, creative thinking, networking, and research. Where Do You Start Your Search? You can’t even start searching for a job unless you know what you’re looking for. Unfortunately, many people are so burned out from their previous jobs that the idea of going back to the same kind of position seems to be a monumental barrier. Often, talking to an experienced career coach can help. No career coach will tell a client what to do but will ask the right questions, and jointly the coach and the client can come to the right conclusion. Occasionally, when the situation is severe, a third party is introduced for help. In such extreme cases, I myself refer clients to an experienced counselor and career-coaching expert who has a Ph.D. and over 20 years of experience specifically in such situations. How to Plan Your Day A job seeker needs to develop a plan and a strategy. The plan is not only a road map but also an important element in achieving a positive mind-set. Focus and determination are integral parts of the process if one wants to shorten it. This job search strategy has as its goal the identification of ways the job seeker will conduct the job search via various methods, including searching for online job listings, connecting with employment recruiters, and building personal relationships through networking. Keeping track of daily activities is essential by developing a spreadsheet with such information as whom you called and e-mailed and when, what networking events you participated in, and so on. Build a roster of people you met and followed up with. And beware of falling into the trap of spending more than 10 or 15 percent of the day answering online job postings and just searching the Internet in vain. The job search has several components to it, and therefore, identifying and measuring realistic milestones are very important in order to maintain the positive attitude and self-confidence needed during the long process. Make sure you have an outstanding résumé. I mean outstandingâ€"not good or very good. Those who do not have an outstanding résumé unknowingly prolong their job search. This is a shame, because they think they’re in the running when in fact they’re notâ€"because their résumé isn’t up to snuff. Companies search mostly among only outstanding candidates. Remember that you are represented by what your résumé projects. No company is knowingly looking for good or very good job candidates. Companies all are looking for outstanding ones. For years, my recommendation has been to use a recommended professional résumé writer. Unless you are one, chances are very good that you’re not capable of producing an outstanding résuméâ€"even if many others have helped you improve or edit it. And last, I suggest you work with a career coach who can prepare you by helping you acquire the skills needed for a successful interview. Only in the Olympics are there three winners. But no one appears to be panicking, as the unemployment rate remains at 5.5%, and some economists dismiss the lackluster hiring as simply a result of bad winter weather. Still, this is no time to get overconfident. Actually, you should never be overconfident where your job is concerned, If the last several years have taught us nothing else, it should be that we must manage our careers daily -- not just when the economy tanks and we fear a layoff. Here's a list of things you should be doing: 1. Instead of just posting a story link or a picture of a dancing elephant on your social network, engage in conversations. Interact with key industry people via Twitter or Facebook, commenting on their links or asking their opinion. Having 12,000 Twitter follower does you little good if they don't see you as a real human being. When you need help finding a job, it's those personal connections that matter the most. 2. Add to your network with a phone call. Don't just rely on LinkedIn to add to your connections. Schedule a time to chat with an existing contact, or follow up with a phone call to someone you recently met at a conference or meeting. Keep the conversation short but memorable. For example, maybe you can pass on some information that the other person will find helpful or introduce them to another contact. 3. Continue to increase your knowledge by listening to podcasts, attending webinars or carving out time to read a new leadership book. Put money aside every month so that you can attend an industry conference, or approach your boss about getting some cross-training. 4. Look at your present position and plot where you would like to be in three to five years. Who now occupies that job? What do you lack in education or experience that could hold you back from that position? Think about how and when you can increase your skills and knowledge to be ready for that job in several years. 5. Take a hard look at your company and your industry. Will they survive the next five to 10 years? Are there enough doubts or warning signs that you need to go back to school immediately? Can you get some training in other jobs that are more likely to be around in a decade? Do you know the right people to help you if your job is eliminated for some reason? While you may think you're too busy to take on any or all of these tasks, think of the alternative. Ask anyone who was out of a job in the last several years and they will tell you they wish they had taken the time to make more connections, build their skills or be aware their industry was headed for trouble.
